Yulimar Rojas Sets Historic World Record in Women’s Triple Jump at Tokyo Olympics
(Tokyo, August 1, 2021) – In a stunning display of athleticism, Venezuelan jumper Yulimar Rojas etched her name in the history books by setting a new women’s triple jump world record at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Rojas, competing in the final, opened her account with an Olympic record-breaking leap of 15.41 meters, adding two centimeters to the previous mark set 13 years ago. But the 25-year-old was just getting started.
Midway through the competition, Rojas found her rhythm and exploded to an astonishing 15.25 meters, once again surpassing the 15-meter barrier. However, the Venezuelan sensation saved the best for last, soaring to a jaw-dropping 15.67 meters on her final attempt, obliterating the previous world record of 15.50 meters set by Ukraine’s Inessa Kravets in 1995.
“I am lost for words; I can’t describe this feeling and this moment,” an ecstatic Rojas said after the competition. “Gold medal winner, with an Olympic record, and a world record … Wow. It is a fantastic night.”
Rojas’ historic performance not only secured Venezuela’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in athletics but also cemented her status as the undisputed queen of the women’s triple jump. The record-breaking jump featured phases of 5.86 meters, 3.82 meters, and an incredible 5.99 meters.
The Venezuelan’s triumph was complemented by impressive displays from her competitors. Portugal’s Patricia Mamona set a national record of 15.01 meters, while Spain’s Ana Peleteiro claimed the bronze medal with a Spanish record of 14.87 meters.
Yulimar Rojas’ record-breaking performance not only etched her name in the annals of Jumping history but also capped off an unforgettable night of athletics at the Tokyo Olympics.
