Rojas Dominates Triple Jump at Herculis IAAF Diamond League Meeting in Monaco
On a sweltering Thursday (11) in Monaco, triple jump world champion Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela produced a performance worthy of her title at the Herculis IAAF Diamond League meeting held at the Port Hercule. Facing a challenging start to the competition, Rojas managed to turn the tables and deliver two brilliant jumps that cemented her standing as the event’s dominant force.
Rojas Overcomes Early Setback
Despite the presence of formidable competitors, including Rio 2016 champion and 2018 World Athlete of the Year Caterine Ibarguen of Colombia, Rojas emerged victorious in the triple jump showdown. After a first-round foul and a second-round effort of 13.28m that left her in 11th and last place, Rojas needed to secure a top-eight finish to advance. On a runway that seemed as unsteady as her position, she landed a monstrous jump of 14.96m, just nine centimetres shy of her personal best.
Rojas Extends Her Lead
With her next attempt, Rojas added another two centimetres to her lead, soaring to 14.98m and effectively ending the competition. Cuba’s Liadagmis Povea, who had set the early pace with a first-round jump of 14.61m, improved to 14.71m to claim second place, while Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts secured third with a best of 14.67m. Ibarguen had to settle for sixth place with a jump of 14.33m.
“The thrilling triple jump event was witnessed by a lively crowd that filled the stands and lined the runway, including Prince Albert of Monaco, who enjoyed the spectacle unfolding before him in the steamy conditions.”
