Triple Jump Titans Converge for Indoor World Championships in Glasgow
As the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow approach, the stage is set for a thrilling showdown in the men’s and women’s triple jump events. The podium finishers from last year’s outdoor World Championships in Budapest are all primed to battle it out for top honors once again.
In the men’s competition, Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango, the reigning outdoor world champion, will be seeking to add the indoor title to his growing collection. The 30-year-old’s winning jump of 17.64m in Budapest was a clear statement of intent. However, he will face stiff competition from the defending indoor world champion, Cuba’s Lazaro Martinez, who matched Zango’s 17.64m leap to take silver in the Hungarian capital.
Martinez’s fellow Cuban, Cristian Napoles, who earned bronze in Budapest, will also be in the mix, as will a host of other top jumpers, including Algeria’s Yasser Mohammed Triki and Italy’s Emmanuel Ihemeje.
On the women’s side, Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez will be looking to make amends for her “bitter feelings” after claiming bronze at the World Championships last year. The 22-year-old, who tops the 2024 world list with a season-best of 14.86m, is determined to upgrade her medal. Challenging her will be the Dominican Republic’s Thea Lafond, the Commonwealth silver medalist, and Jamaica’s Kimberly Williams, a two-time indoor podium finisher.
“With 10 of the 12 finalists from the 2023 outdoor Worlds set to compete in Glasgow, the triple jump events promise to be thrilling showcases of athletic excellence. Fans and spectators can expect to witness world-class performances and fierce rivalries as the global superstars of the discipline vie for the coveted indoor titles.”
