Tan Qiujiao Stuns with Massive Triple Jump at World U18 Championships
(Cali, Colombia – August 18, 2022) – In a thrilling display of talent, the girls’ triple jump competition at the World U18 Championships proved to be a captivating and unpredictable affair. Heading into the event, the top five athletes were separated by a mere 16 centimeters, making it challenging to predict a clear favorite. However, it was China’s Tan Qiujiao who emerged as the surprise champion, delivering a performance that stunned the crowd.
After fouling her first attempt, the 17-year-old Tan soared to an impressive world U18-leading mark of 13.64 meters in the second round, a personal best improvement of 46 centimeters. This dramatic jump immediately established her as the athlete to beat.
Aleksandra Nacheva, the pre-event favorite, tried valiantly to respond, setting a personal best of 13.54 meters in the fifth round. However, this was not enough to overtake Tan’s commanding lead.
In a competition marked by impressive depth, Cuba’s Zulia Hernandez broke new ground, opening with a personal best of 13.29 meters, which she was unable to improve upon in the subsequent rounds.
