Jumping Achievements Soar to New Heights in 2017

December 26, 2017 – As the year draws to a close, we take a look back at the standout performances that defined the world of Jumping in 2017. From record-breaking feats to the emergence of rising stars, it was a year filled with moments that captivated fans across the globe.

In the men’s high jump, Mutaz Essa Barshim continued to cement his status as one of the all-time greats, with 11 clearances over the prized 2.40m mark – second only to the legendary Javier Sotomayor. However, the event also saw the arrival of promising young talents like Danil Lysenko and a thrilling European U20 Championships that produced a trio of jumpers – Maksim Nedasekau, Tom Gale, and Dmytro Nikitin – who pushed each other to new personal bests.

The men’s pole vault crowned a new “king” in Sam Kendricks, whose remarkable consistency saw him win 17 competitions, often clearing 5.80m or higher. Compatriot Armand Duplantis also made waves, smashing the world U20 record with a phenomenal 5.90m vault at just 17 years old.

In the long jump, South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga enjoyed a flawless season, remaining undefeated in nine meetings and cementing his status as the world’s best. Meanwhile, China’s conveyor belt of young, globally competitive jumpers continued to impress, with several rising talents making their mark on the international stage.

The triple jump was once again dominated by Christian Taylor, who secured his fifth global outdoor title. But the event also welcomed back the exciting Pedro Pablo Pichardo, whose battles with Taylor in 2015 were a highlight of that year.

On the women’s side, Maria Lasitskene’s remarkable consistency saw her win 24 competitions in a row, clearing 2.00m or higher a staggering 15 times. Ekaterini Stefanidi emerged as the clear leader in the pole vault, while Brittney Reese added a fourth world title to her impressive resume in the long jump.

The women’s triple jump saw the rise of Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, who dethroned the long-reigning Caterine Ibarguen to claim gold at the World Championships in London.
