Mondo Duplantis Aims for Another World Record in Stockholm
The seventh Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season takes place in Stockholm this Sunday, and all eyes will be on the electrifying high jump and pole vault competitions.
Mahuchikh Seeks to Cement Dominance in Women’s High Jump
Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the dominant force in women’s high jump over the past two years, will be making her first appearance in the 2024 Wanda Diamond League season. The Ukrainian sensation will be eager to assert her status as the firm favorite for both Olympic gold and the Diamond Trophy, especially after Serbian rival Angelina Topic’s recent success.
Duplantis Aims to Thrill Home Crowd in Pole Vault
In the men’s pole vault, Swedish star Mondo Duplantis is set to thrill his home crowd. Duplantis has delivered some stellar performances at the Stockholm Diamond League in recent years, including the then-outdoor world best of 6.16m in 2021. With weather permitting, the Swedish fans will be hoping for something even more impressive this time around. Duplantis opened his Diamond League season with a world record of 6.24m in Xiamen and came close to hitting 6.25m in Ostrava earlier this month. Whether he can set an eighth career world record in Stockholm remains to be seen, but the men’s pole vault event will undoubtedly be the highlight of the day.
Brown Aims to Cement Status in Women’s Sprints
The women’s sprints will also be a key focus, with Brittany Brown of the United States aiming to cement her status as a serious contender for the Diamond Trophy. The American stunned heavyweights such as Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, and Great Britain’s Daryll Neita with a breathtaking victory in the 200m at the Bislett Games in Oslo. Brown will be looking to replicate that success in both the 100m and 200m in Stockholm.
Bol and Girma Seek Season Debuts
Elsewhere, Femke Bol of the Netherlands, the reigning Wanda Diamond League champion in the women’s 400m hurdles, will make her season debut as she eyes a first-ever Olympic title in 2024. And in the men’s steeplechase, Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma will be keen to return to winning ways after a mixed start to his Diamond League campaign this year.
“Whether he can set an eighth career world record in Stockholm remains to be seen, but the men’s pole vault event will undoubtedly be the highlight of the day.”
